A recent survey by Scandalous Foods reveals that traditional Indian sweets, or “mithai,” continue to overwhelmingly dominate festive gifting preferences among urban Indian consumers, with 78% opting for classics like barfi and laddoo. This preference significantly outweighs modern alternatives such as artisanal chocolates or luxury hampers, which account for only 22% of choices. The survey highlights that cultural tradition and nostalgia are the primary drivers for 35% of gifting decisions, followed by taste preferences at 20%. While packaging and pricing play a lesser role, a generational shift is noted, with 58% of recipients under 35 still preferring mithai, though contemporary formats are gaining ground.
